Pepper spray is undoubtedly the #1 non-lethal self-defense tool that women carry. It is a temporary irritant that causes pain, burning, and temporary blindness, allowing you time to escape. It's also used in riot control, and policing. It's also used to defend against dogs and there are "bear strength" formulas available. Pepper spray contains capsaicin, the same chemical that makes chili peppers hot.  It can be decontaminated with fresh air and soap and water.

A stun gun is another non-lethal self-defense tool that uses electricity to temporarily immobilize an attacker. Stun guns are designed to be held in the hand and are effective when used within arm's reach. Stun guns are intended to incapacitate an attacker, not kill or injure them. Some stun guns have safety switches, disable pins, and built-in flashlights to prevent accidental discharges.

A self defense baton, also known as a truncheon, nightstick, or billy club, is a short stick allow you to strike an attacker and maintain distance. It is usually expandable, made of wood, plastic, or metal, and can be used for both defense and offense, allowing you to both block and strike.
