So you just bought your first firearm … now what?

I know – there is a great chasm that divides us as a nation regarding the availability and use of firearms by our citizens. And no matter on which side you stand, I understand that everyone has valid reasons to support their beliefs and claims of truth.

But I also know that there are many bad people in this world who want to steal from you, and hurt you, and because of this, at some point in time you may have considered that owning a firearm is an acceptable way of protecting yourself and your family.

That firearm by itself cannot protect you – it is an inert object, and unless you know how to properly use it, it will not help you at all.

If you have already purchased a firearm, I hope it’s one that is right for you. Size, type and caliber are just two things to consider during your purchase.

Will you be keeping this firearm at home and transport it to a firing range to practice? Or are you thinking of conceal carrying your firearm?

Each of these options has a set of legal requirements to seriously consider.

But regardless of which option you choose training on how to operate that firearm with confidence and skill while shooting at your intended target, is of the utmost importance.

When the day comes when you must use it to protect yourself and your family your ability to deploy the firearm and fire it quickly and confidently will make the difference between saving yourself and family or getting hurt. So please, get the best training possible and practice regularly.

Several gun shops offer training on handling and shooting firearms. You could also join a gun club.  Many gun clubs provide training for their members and provide opportunities to participate in shooting sport competitions.

My wife and I have enjoyed “steel challenge” competitions a lot. My wife is also an active member of an organization called “Girl and a Gun”. I highly recommend this group to any woman who is interested in learning more about firearms.

Make your experience with firearms a safe and pleasant one with continuous training and practice.
